Tamrat Layne Admassu is an Ethiopian former prime minister, democracy advocate, leadership trainer, and speaker whose life reflects a remarkable journey of political struggle, public service, imprisonment, and personal transformation.
Born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Tamrat became active in the democratic student movement during the early and mid-1970s, following the fall of the imperial monarchy and the rise of military rule. For more than seventeen years, he provided political leadership within a movement opposing the dictatorship, including fifteen years of armed struggle in pursuit of greater freedom and national change.
He played a leading role in founding a political and military organization and later helped bring about the fall of the regime in 1991. He went on to serve four years as prime minister, followed by two years as deputy prime minister and minister of defense.
Later, amid political differences over the country’s direction and policy, he was imprisoned and spent twelve years as a political prisoner, including time in solitary confinement. During his fifth year in prison, after deep personal reflection, he experienced a profound spiritual transformation and became a follower of Jesus.
Tamrat lives in the United States with his wife and two children. He serves as a speaker, leadership development trainer, and small-group developer, traveling internationally, and is the Senior International Diplomatic Representative for KULA Group, a global impact investment company. He and his wife also lead two organizations: Life Center Ethiopia, which serves orphans and widows, and Transform Leadership Network, which develops young leaders across Africa.
He holds a BA in Development Studies, an MBA in Economic Management, an MA in Public Policy and International Affairs, and a Juris Master in International Legal Studies from institutions in the United Kingdom and the United States.
